Food labels are about more than just following the rules (though we do need to follow them!). They’re our opportunity to:
Stay compliant with cottage food laws – each state has its own rules, but in general, we need to include ingredient lists, allergens, and our contact information.
Protect customers – clear labels help people make safe choices, especially when it comes to allergens.
Build our brand – a professional-looking label with a logo, website, or QR code is like a mini billboard that goes home with every customer.
Encourage repeat sales – when someone takes our charcuterie box to a party and a guest asks, “Where did you get that?” our label answers the question for us.
Getting the Basics Right
We don’t need to overcomplicate this. A solid label usually includes:
Business name and contact info (email, phone, or website)
Ingredients listed by weight (largest to smallest)
Allergen information (bold and easy to spot)
Net weight or quantity, if required by your state
When the package is too small to fit all that info on a sticker, we can always tie on a little tag or card. The key is to make sure the information travels with the product.
